2020 Domaine de Beaurenard "Boisrenard" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2020 Domaine de Beaurenard "Boisrenard" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (99JD, 96DC, 95JS, 94VN, 94WS). Jeb Dunnuck: "The flagship from this great estate is the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Boisrenard, which is based on 80% Grenache and small doses of 17 other varieties. This deeply hued beauty offers a stunning bouquet of blackberries, scorched earth, licorice, ground pepper, and sappy garrigue. I always find a Burgundian-like texture on this wine, and the 2020 is no exception – this is one to put into a blind tasting of Grand Cru Red Burgundies and shock your friends. Medium to full-bodied, ultra-pure, with grippy, sappy tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish, it’s pure class all the way. It's going to need at least 4-6 years of bottle age, but this is a wine you don't want to miss, and one of the finest wines I’ve tasted from this estate." (11/2022)

Boisrenard is the Coulon family's old-vine Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvée, selected from some of Domaine de Beaurenard's oldest parcels and based on the appellation's traditional mix of varieties led by Grenache. The estate has been in the same family for generations, with cellar work centered on classic Rhône methods and aging in large oak vessels.

Decanter

Creamy, dark fruited, with oak spice and slightly rigid tannins. Really quite introverted currently, but this should be good in time, as it has balance, freshness and elegance. Lovely sense of purity to the fruit flavours, and serious length. But you must wait for the tannins to subside. The oak work isn't excessive, the wine will benefit in time. Unbelievable tannic quality, so impressive in concentration and texture. Made by blending all the soils and grape varieties of the appellation, old vines, 5% new oak. (MW) (11/2024)

James Suckling

This very impressive Chateauneuf has stacks of black fruit aromas and stunning tannin structure, with a very long driving finish that’s plush and fresh. A cuvee of 80% grenache with all the other varieties that the appellation allows. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. (04/2023)

Vinous

The Grenache-led 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Boisrenard aged for one year in foudre, coming in at 15.5% alcohol. It has an edge over the traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is expected as it sells at a higher price. The 2020 Cuvée Boisrenard bursts from the glass with enticing aromas of rose petals, crushed violets, precisely defined red cherry, raspberry, strawberry and a twist of lavender and mint. Full-bodied and tightly-structured, I would give this at least four more years in bottle. (NG) (04/2023)

Wine Spectator

Boasts beautiful red currant, licorice and spice cake flavors that are concentrated and rich, yet balanced by salty minerality, earth and fresh pepper highlights. Shows smoke and singed sandalwood that fill in the backdrop, while graphite laces the still-grippy finish. This needs a bit of time to unfurl. (KB) (02/2023)
