2001 Bodegas LAN "Culmen" Rioja Reserva
95
Decanter
Review Date: 12/2023This was just Culmen’s third vintage after 1994 and 1995. It’s a contrasting style from the Viña Lanciano. A deep garnet colour – even after 22 years. In the mouth it starts supple but soon builds to a full-bodied, fleshy palate: spicy with black pepper and firm tannins. The finish is long and intense after all these years, and there’s a keynote acidity which refreshes the whole. The grapes were double-selected. Malolactic fermentation and ageing took place in the same new French oak – 26 months in all – followed by 20 months in bottle before release. (SJE)

Powerful and expressive. This massive red delivers ripe flavors of blueberry, plum and prune, backed by plenty of toasty oak and framed by muscular tannins, finishing with spices, tobacco and heat. International style, but with a sauvage note that keeps it distinctive. Best after 2007. (TM)

The opulent, voluptuous, medium to full-bodied 2001 Culmen, a selection made at the winery, comes in a heavy bottle. Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by a sweet perfume of blackberries, cassis, licorice, and spicy oak. This modern-styled, impressively-endowed, rich, long wine is best consumed over the next decade.

With color akin to crude oil with a violet tint, this is one tank of a wine. The nose is massively roasted, with espresso, bacon fat and blackberry melding in monster fashion. In the mouth, there's more licorice, pepper and syrup than bounce, which makes it somewhat of a one-trick pony. Heady for sure, but lacking that extra nuance or two that the great ones have. (MS)
