The Russian River Valley AVA, located in Sonoma County, is renowned for its cool-climate varieties, especially Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, grown in its southern and central regions where coastal breezes and morning fog extend the growing season. Vineyards near Green Valley Creek produce some of the AVA's most balanced wines, while warmer northern areas near Windsor focus on Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. This diverse AVA also includes the distinct Chalk Hill region, known for its richer, tropical Chardonnays.
