The 2017 Blanc De Blancs is the most refined of these wines from Ultramarine, with a compact and racy structure. It opens to an elegantly woven perfume of white flowers, lemon curd, wet stone, and lime blossom and is medium bodied on the palate, with driving acidity and a mineral texture. Tension-filled and persistent, with pristine notes of green apple soaring through the finish, this vibrant and energetic wine is sure to offer a long drinking window. Drink 2024-2034. (AF)

The 2017 Blanc de Blancs Heintz Vineyard is closed at this stage, taking time to segue from initial rubbery tones to touches of flint, toast and nori. The medium-bodied palate is dry and creamy, with expansive, savory flavors and a long, layered finish. When I tasted this as a hand-disgorged sample at the winery in September 2022 (before it was officially disgorged, topped up and capped for release), it was showing generous stone fruit—this spent 40 months on the lees and may just need more time after its fairly recent disgorgement. Whole-cluster pressed to old oak barrels, initial fermentation with native yeasts, malolactic blocked. Spends almost 46 months on the lees in bottle. Disgorged 17 November 2021. 2 g/l dosage. Pale greenish gold with extra-fine bubbles. Smells of tidepools and toasted brioche. A silky mousse delivers flavours of bright citrus pith, brioche, seawater, kelp and just a touch of toasty oak. An amazing salty lemon-peel flavour lingers in the finish. Expansive, mouth-watering and delicious. This is a preposterously good wine, certainly one of the best California sparkling wines I've ever had. 19+/20 points (AY)

Notes

One of the most exciting wine projects in California today happens to be an upstart garagiste with an obsession for redefining sparkling wine in America. Michael Cruse operates from a small industrial park in Petaluma just off the bustling Highway 101 corridor. After a brief career in molecular and cell biology laboratories, Cruse worked his first harvest in 2006. After learning about the meticulous, labor-intensive process of producing artisanal grower Champagne, he became convinced that if winemakers applied the same approach to sparkling wine in California, the results could be game-changing. Cruse now stands at the forefront of a burgeoning movement making incredibly beautiful sparkling single-vineyard wines from some of Sonoma's most acclaimed vineyard sites. As William Kelley writes in Decanter, "But by pioneering the artisanal methods and terroir-driven philosophy of the grower Champagne movement here in North America, it’s fair to say he’s enjoying an influence that’s being felt far beyond his modest facility in Petaluma."
