The 2001 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is a great choice for readers who can be patient. Freshly cut flowers, mint, spices and violets are some of the many notes that flow from this structured, powerful Barolo. The 2001 remains virile and incredibly youthful in its personality. Sweet balsamic notes develop in the glass, adding considerable depth and nuance. The San Giuseppe is a jewel of a wine with a bright, bright future. Today it is stunningly beautiful. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2031. Cavallotto often gets lost in the shuffle among Piedmont’s elite producers. Maybe that’s because the dual flagship Riservas Vignolo and San Giuseppe are released long after most wines hit the market. Barolo lovers know better. Over the decades Cavallotto has built a sterling track record. The wines have never been better than under the leadership of siblings Alfio, Giuseppe and Laura Cavallotto. The Baroli are made in a traditional style and see extended aging in cask. The best vintages can last 30-40 years. (AG)

Cavallotto's Bricco Boschis estate covers some 25ha of vineyard, and Vigna San Giuseppe is the southwest-facing amphitheatre just below the winery in Castiglione Falletto. It has a broad, spicy nose with aromas of seasoned oak and dried red fruit. The palate is juicy and ripe, with dark chocolate-coated fruit flavours and an underlying savoury, earthy tone sustained by fine, silky tannins and remarkable overall balance. Though drinking well now, this will go on for years yet. (MG)

Castiglione Falletto. Pale ruby. Not unlike the estate's Vignolo 2001, but definitely a big step up, with concentrated fruit and extremely well knit and balanced. Impressive. (WS)
