Graham's Fine Tawny Porto
Notes
Graham’s roots in Porto run deep, starting in 1820 when William and John Graham, merchants from Scotland, set up shop trading Port wine along the Douro River.¹ Their firm grew through careful vineyard selection and a reputation for rich, structured wines built for aging. By 1890 the Symington family entered the picture, eventually taking full ownership in 1970 and shaping the house into one of the Douro’s benchmarks. The lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto’s historic center, is where Graham’s ages its wines in seasoned oak casks. The cool Atlantic-influenced climate there slows maturation and preserves freshness, a key to the house style. The Fine Tawny blends younger tawny-aged wines matured in seasoned oak casks, where steady oxygen exposure softens color and texture. Aging typically runs a few years rather than a declared age statement, aiming for consistency and approachability rather than vintage identity. Grapes come from traditional Douro field blends, fermented briefly before fortification with grape spirit to retain natural sweetness. A gentle oxidative regime defines the category.
