2014 Marques de Riscal 'Baron de Chirel' Reserva, Rioja
96
Decanter
Review Date: 01/2019One of the most distinctive wines in Rioja, with a touch of spice and cassis over the classic Tempranillo blackberry fruit. Intensely tannic but very round, finely grained, complex, made for the long haul. In line with top Riscal of 100 years ago. (PBT)

Deep violet. Expressive aromas of dark fruits and candied flowers, along with allspice, vanilla and pipe tobacco accents. Lush and appealingly sweet, offering juicy blackberry, cherry-vanilla and mocha flavors and a spicy nuance that emerges on the back half. Finishes sappy, chewy and quite long, with slow-building tannins that meld smoothly into the wine's sappy fruit. (JR)
Notes
Barón de Chirel is Marqués de Riscal’s modern Rioja Reserva, first made in 1986 after experimental selections from the estate’s oldest vines. The cuvée is based primarily on Tempranillo with a small proportion of other permitted red varieties, and is aged in French oak before release.
