Tasted blind in a line-up of 2011 Amoureuses in Holland, La Pousse d’Or’s 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses is not quite as bright as its peers. The nose here is a little more introspective than Cathiard’s Aux Reignots ‘11, but it has an interesting character with touches of sous-bois and wild mushroom infusing the red berry fruit. It is tightly wound at first, but opens in fine fashion, yet never quite attains the intensity of Roumier or Albert Bichot’s 2011 Amoureuses. It does not need to. The palate is medium-bodied with bright red cherry, redcurrant and citrus fruit, crisp tannins with a slightly angular finish. It does not quite have the depth of Roumier’s’11, but it possesses very fine tension and coalesces beautifully in the glass. This is a mercurial, but compelling, Amoureuses – one of the finest of this vintage. (NM)

This is notably spicier with a pure, elegant, airy and restrained nose of red currants, blue berries, floral hints and exotic tea scents. There is equally good purity on the energetic and mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess a highly seductive and refined mouth feel as the supporting tannins are beautifully well-integrated on the impeccably well-balanced finish. This is classier than the Charmes but not necessary any more complex or more persistent.

Full red. Very ripe, musky aromas of raspberry, crushed stone, underbrush and flowers. Juicy and penetrating, showing excellent grip and energy. More complex and less evolved than the Charmes, boasting excellent definition and saline complexity to its sappy red fruit flavors. Finishes with suave tannins and lingering notes of spices and flowers. This, too, has turned out very well. (ST)

Notes

Les Amoureuses is one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most prized premier cru vineyards, sitting just below Musigny Grand Cru. Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, based in Volnay, farms a notable range of Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits sites, and this bottling comes from Pinot Noir in one of the Côte de Nuits’ most celebrated premier crus.
