Dakota Shy began in 2008 when Todd Newman started producing small lots of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with winemaker Tom Garrett. The partners built the winery on the lower slopes of Pritchard Hill after acquiring the site in 2014 and completing construction in 2017. The team now works with more than a dozen vineyard sources across Napa Valley, including sites in St. Helena, Rutherford, Oakville, Calistoga, Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder, and Atlas Peak. Production focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon made in small fermenters with detailed lot selection.

“The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Steltzner Vineyard is an inky, potent wine. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, chocolate, sweet spice and copious new oak all run through this dense, opulent Cabernet. This feels a bit riper than most of the wines in the range, with a short-ish finish and not much complexity. (AG)” (12/2023)

“A lavish, rich and densely packed red that celebrates ripe, opulent fruit flavors. Strong toasted oak, cinnamon, cloves and cedar top bold black cherries, blueberries and blackberries on the palate. “Beautiful fruit notes of red, blue, and black berries intermixed with chocolate, plums, spice, and sappy flowers emerge from the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Steltzner Family Vineyard. Rich and full-bodied on the palate, it's round and concentrated, showing the vintage's fleshy, sweetly fruited style while staying balanced and delicate, with velvety tannins.
