2002 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Auslese
Notes
Selbach-Oster is a historic Mosel estate with family roots in winegrowing and wine shipping dating back to around 1600. The winery is based in Zeltingen-Rachtig in the Middle Mosel and farms roughly 23–25 hectares, the vast majority planted to Riesling on steep, slate slopes in Zeltingen (Himmelreich, Sonnenuhr, Schlossberg), Graach (Himmelreich, Domprobst), Wehlen, and Bernkastel. Many parcels are old, own-rooted vines, and farming is a mix of organic and sustainable practices. In the cellar, musts settle by gravity, fermentations are spontaneous and cool in a combination of traditional 1,000-liter fuders and stainless steel, with long lees contact and no fining. The estate produces classic Prädikat and botrytized wines, with an increasing focus on dry styles and Grosses Gewächs. Zeltinger Schlossberg is one of the Selbach family’s home vineyards, a steep Mosel site above the village of Zeltingen with Devonian slate soils. The Auslese designation places this among the estate’s late-picked Rieslings, made from selectively harvested fruit in a traditional Mosel idiom rather than through heavy cellar intervention.
