2006 Giovanni Rocca "Bricco Ravera" Barolo

Wine Spectator
Review Date: 04/2011This red is stained with licorice, black cherry and tar notes, all wrapped in a rich texture. A steely structure underneath melds with the sweet fruit on the long finish. (BS)

Notes
Rocca Giovanni is a three-generation Monforte d’Alba estate working 22 hectares across key Barolo zones such as Mosconi, Ravera di Monforte, Pianromualdo, Sant’Anna, Trenta, and Giudice. The family shifted from selling grapes to estate bottling in the late 1970s, building a cellar and expanding production with Giovanni, his wife Caterina, and longtime enologist Piero Ballario. Farming follows a low-intervention approach with sulfur and Bordeaux mixture as the only treatments, plus periodic cow-manure fertilization that keeps yields well below legal limits. Winemaking stays similarly restrained to preserve site character.
