1989 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva

91

Vinous

Review Date: 02/2010

Borgogno's 1989 Barolo Riserva reveals more freshness, clarity and delineation than the 1990, qualities that are apparent starting with the wine's livelier color. Dried roses, violets, spices, cherries and plums are some of the nuances that are found in the layered, structured 1989 Barolo Riserva. There is more than enough intensity and depth in the fruit to balance the searing, powerful tannins, qualities that follow through to a powerful close. The 1989 is classic, old-style Barolo. According to the back label, this bottle was decanted in November 2007, which is a helpful indication from the winery. (AG)

Notes

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli is one of the great historic names of Barolo, with roots dating back to 1761 and a reputation built on unwavering adherence to traditional Piedmontese winemaking. The estate’s Riserva wines are produced from Nebbiolo grown on the calcareous marl soils surrounding the commune of Barolo, where elevated hillside vineyards and long growing seasons produce wines of formidable structure and longevity. Borgogno’s classical methods — extended macerations, aging in large neutral botti, and prolonged cellar maturation before release — allow the wine to develop the tar, rose petal, earthy spice, and savory complexity that define mature traditional Barolo.
