The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Village delivers aromas of raspberries, cherries and incense, followed by a medium-bodied, fleshy and lively palate, concluding with a saline finish. The Trapet family has produced an attractive set 2023s. As readers will remember, there have been a host of changes at this address in recent years: in 2020, fully seven hectares of the domaine's holdings were converted both to échalas and to higher trellising stakes and wires, depending on the steepness of the slope. Since then, changes have been rolled out in other parcels too. Given the extent of Trapet's holdings in prime climats, that means that the walk from Morey-Saint-Denis to Gevrey-Chambertin suddenly looks rather different. In the cuverie, winemaking continues to be classical, with important percentages of whole clusters, followed by élevage in ever diminishing percentages of new oak, with foudres joining barrels in the cellar.(WK)

Note: from Les Cercueils, Jouise, Clos Prieur Bas, Etelois, Vignes Belle, Roncevie, Au Prunier, and Les Crais. An agreeably fresh and airy nose features mostly dark berry, sauvage and more prominent earth characters. The medium weight flavors are not as dense but they're finer with very good punch and a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the balanced and youthfully austere finale.

Still in barrel (demi-muids). A crimson ruby colour. Slightly nutty on the nose with the austere salinity of some of the Trapet wines this year. Lean and tight today, which is a leaf day in the calendar, but with a cheerful red fruit behind. This will need, and will get, some more elevage. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted Nov 2024.

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Village contains 30% whole bunch and is aged in 450- and 500-liter barrels. It has a perfumed bouquet with fine delineation and wilted rose petals infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a dab of dark chocolate on the entry. This is lightly spiced with fine depth and a structured finish that needs a little more flesh.(NM)
