From a higher elevation north-facing site, the 2017 Cerro Sur is 73% Cabernet Franc and 27% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in 50% new French oak. It offers beautiful Cabernet Franc dark, chocolately fruit as well as plenty of tobacco, earth, forest floor, violets, and truffle aromas and flavors. Deep, rich, medium to full-bodied, and balanced, it's already approachable yet will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age. 96+

This offers up perfumed cassis, warm cherry preserve and smoldering red tea aromas and flavors, set against a backdrop of savory and iron accents. The long finish unfurls slowly, with a smoldering feel. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2021 through 2032. (JM)

Lots of ripe yet fresh fruit with red licorice and redcurrants. Medium to full body. Very fruity. Primary and delicious. Like grape must. Pure. Tight and fine tannins. Drink or hold.

The 2017 Cerro Sur is especially aromatic in this vintage. Cedar, sweet tobacco, mint and dried flowers really speak to Cabernet Franc. Soft and relatively easygoing, but with tons of both nuance and complexity, the 2017 is gorgeous. Just as it was last year, the 2017 is so pretty, but it is also quite refined. In this tasting, it is a wine of real beauty and finesse. (AG)

Notes

Favia Wines was founded in 2003 by viticulturist Annie Favia and winemaker Andy Erickson, who built the project around small-lot Napa Valley and Sierra Foothills fruit handled with minimal intervention. Their home base is a historic 1886 stone-cellar property in Coombsville, where they farm Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in volcanic soils and work closely with select growers across Coombsville, Oakville, Carneros, and Amador County. Production remains limited, generally a few hundred cases per bottling, with native-yeast fermentations, gentle extraction, and a focus on site expression. In 2023 they expanded into an 86-acre Oakville estate, marking the next phase of the winery’s long-term development.
