A monster effort, it is one of the most extracted and powerful St. Emilions of the vintage. A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc produced from tiny yields of 25 hectoliters per hectare, the 2000 will be bottled with neither fining nor filtrations. It displays an opaque plum/purple color as well as a gorgeous, earthy bouquet revealing scents of new saddle leather, roasted meats, underbrush, plum liqueur, black cherries, caramel and beef blood. There is an aggressive overlay of oak, enormous body, powerful tannin, and a mouth-staining, impressive as well as aggressive finish. This offering may be a throwback to another era, but is has 30-40 years of longevity. A serious vin de garde, Clos de Sarpe's 2000 should be purchased only by those with both patience and youth on their sides. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030.
