A rounded nose of black and spicy red fruit, moss and tobacco leaf. Full-bodied with well-integrated tannins and great, driving acidity. Three-dimensional and vibrant, with ripe dark fruit, yet it remains focused and lean throughout. Excellent balance and intensity.

Review Date: 08/2021
A show-stopping Pinot Noir from Nico Cueva, fermented in concrete, oak and stainless steel, including 6% whole-cluster fruit, then aged in separate lots for 16 months in 40% new French oak, before blending and an additional four months in neutral oak and steel. High-toned, heady aromas of dark cherry and sarsaparilla, pine bark and tangy grapefruit zest, towing the line between haughty decadence and controlled restraint. Savoury and sweet flavours emerge in waves, backed by fine-grained cedar tannins and gentle acidity, then lingering notes of crème brûlée, pine, cocoa and rose petals. (JC)

Notes

Kosta Browne’s single-vineyard Pinot Noirs are produced in small lots, with each vineyard kept separate through fermentation and élevage before final barrel selection. Treehouse Vineyard is part of the winery’s Russian River Valley vineyard-designate program, and this 1.5L bottling comes from the generally even, unhurried 2018 Sonoma growing season.
