2022 Paul Hobbs "Hyde Vineyard" Carneros Pinot Noir (1.5L)

James Suckling
Review Date: 11/2023Fascinating aromas of black cherries, strawberries, lead pencil, and spices. Full to medium body. Chewy and grainy tannins. Flavorful and textured. Real heritage clone character. Reminds me of the great Mondavi pinots of the 1970s and 1980s.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyard was bottled in August 2023 and tasted in November. It has deep aromas of charcuterie, black licorice and rooibos tea leaves complementing a core of pomegranate and briar fruit. The medium-bodied palate is silky, seamless and packed with generous, perfumed fruit. It has a long, spicy finish and is notable for its detail and nuance.

Ripe and juicy, with a lovely set of mulberry, black cherry and loganberry notes that unfurl over the caressing but persistent structure. Light apple wood, anise and hibiscus notes fill in on the vivid finish.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyard is powerful and somewhat bombastic, as wines from this site can be. Grilled herbs, leather, tobacco, incense, menthol, licorice and spice lend notable complexity throughout. There is some grippiness in the tannin that needs to resolve. This is very nicely done. (AG)
Notes
Bottled in magnum, this vineyard-designate Pinot Noir comes from Hyde Vineyard, one of Carneros' benchmark sites. The vineyard's position near San Pablo Bay gives it the cool, wind-influenced conditions that have made it a long-running source for top California Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers.
