Moulin-à-Vent stands on its own and is worthy of the Premier Cru status it is seeking. Beautiful, savory aromas greet you on the nose with shy raspberry resting in the wings whispering to Darjeeling tea, dried hay and black plum. The midpalate is a lesson in complexity, even-handedness and restraint. Chateau du Moulin-à-Vent proprietor Éduoard Parinet says, “I want to bring Moulin-à-Vent back to the Grand Cru reputation it deserves,” and he is doing so indeed with gorgeous wines like this one that you don't want to stop sipping. *Editors' Choice* (RS)

Power builds in this intriguing red, with raspberry coulis and red currant flavors flanked by cool mineral tones, all growing in intensity -- though staying elegant. Simmers with notes of smoke, grilled herbs and sandalwood, while white pepper and pretty floral hints line the close. (KB)

The 2021 Moulin-à-Vent La Rochelle has a "cooler" bouquet, as you would expect, dark berry fruit, black pepper and light seaweed scents coming through. The palate is medium-bodied and certainly lighter than the previous two vintages, with a little greenness, not as complex as other vintages, but it maintains balance and should drink early whilst waiting for the 2019 and 2020. Notes

Château du Moulin-à-Vent traces its origins to 1732, when the estate—then known as Château des Thorins—anchored the historic heart of the Moulin-à-Vent cru. Its long lineage includes the visionary Philiberte Pommier, whose 19th-century stewardship culminated in a gold medal at the 1862 Universal Exhibition, and a major transition in 1911 when Julien Damoy acquired the property and expanded its reputation. The modern era began in 2009 with the Parinet family, who restored the domaine after a difficult period for Beaujolais. Today the estate farms 30 hectares across top sites such as Champ de Cour, La Rochelle, Les Vérillats, Les Thorins, and Clos de Londres, emphasizing organic conversion, massale selection, and parcel-specific vinification. Production centers on Gamay grown on granite-based soils shaped by the region’s defining winds, with élevage in the château’s historic cellars.
