Bouchard's Chevalier La Cabotte stands out as a 'grand cru' because of its proximity to Montrachet and resemblance to it in style. It isn't Montrachet, even if wine from this 0.21ha vineyard was once sold as such. The 2023 has exotic aromas ranging from green apple and lime peel to nectarine and passionfruit. There is a firm, saline minerality and a suggestion of smoky reduction. The texture has superb concentration, depth and tension. There is massive extract here, but nothing is heavy – it is nearly effortless in its beauty, yet the finish is immensely long.(CC)

A totally different nose, compared to the straight Chevalier. Interesting that it can be so different. There is some liquorice here, much more backward, not immediately so Chevalier. Massive density on the palate with nobility as well, extremely backward apart from the endless finish. Flirting with Montrachet qualities! Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted Nov 2025.

Purity of fruit rings out in a subtle way with flowers, sliced al dente apples and a citrus undertone. Showing hints of stones and fresh herbs on both the nose and palate, it’s full-bodied with so much depth and focus. Tight center palate and a long, intense finish. Needs time to open. Best after 2027.

Bouchard is the largest owner of Chevalier, and these 21 ares have been domaine owned since 1838. They sit on the border with Montrachet and have been vinified separately since 1992 (1997 was the first commercial release.) This is consistently a contender for white wine of the year, and the 2023 is as exquisite as ever. It is balletic—graceful but powerful. Its satiny texture shimmies across the palate, steeping it with its flattering, concentrated flavors. Invigorating acidity gives the medium body bewitching energy and the posh finish staying power. Already sublime and highly inviting, this has an impressive life expectancy.
