Stunning, with aromas of warmed yet fresh Jonagold apple and white peach, followed by creamy notes of papaya and mango, mixed with lively mirabelle plum and green apple fruit. Flashes of verbena, quinine and lemon shortbread fill the lengthy finish, revealing a backdrop of wet stone at the very end. A distinctive wine with terrific range. (JM)

Now in bottle, the 2011 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc Magis (75% Grenache Blanc, 10% Clairette, 10% Roussanne and 5% Bourboulenc) is another fabulous white from this estate. Light gold in color, it gives up knockout aromas and flavors of white currants and assorted stone fruit, crushed rock like minerality, brioche, vanilla cream and white flowers. This is followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered effort that has impressive concentration, integrated acidity and a pure, seamless, elegant style that allows it to drink beautifully today, as well as evolve gracefully for over a decade.

Notes

From Rotem and Mounir Saouma, the couple behind the Burgundy micro-négociant Lucien Le Moine, Magis is their white Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the Saouma family estate project in the southern Rhône. The cellar work follows Mounir's patient, Burgundian-influenced approach, with long élevage before bottling rather than a quick release schedule.
