The 2024 Malgiacca "Dalìtro" Toscana Rosso (1L) is a pure, highly energetic "vino da merenda" (snack wine) produced by biodynamic grower Saverio Petrilli from small, scattered plots of old vines in the hills northeast of Lucca. This vintage captures an incredibly fresh, light-on-its-feet expression of traditional Tuscan grapes. The blend is roughly 50% Sangiovese balanced by field-blend portions of Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo. The fruit is entirely hand-destemmed, feet-crushed, spontaneously fermented in small open tubs, and raised across stainless steel, old wood, and amphora for six months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered in a classic 1-liter format with negligible sulfur. In the glass, it shows a bright, translucent ruby red. The nose is highly expressive, primary, and crunchy, leaping with wild strawberries, sour cherries, and fresh raspberries, overlaid with a distinctly wild, savory lift of white pepper and damp forest floor. On the palate, it is strikingly vertical, nimble, and built entirely on high-toned drinkability. The cool growing conditions translate into an exceptionally brisk, nervous acidic spine and ultra-soft, gentle tannins that completely avoid any heavy extraction. It finishes dry, lip-smackingly fresh, and savory, naturally demanding a casual plate of salumi.
