Viader's “Black Label” showcases their mountain vineyard in a different light, by blending the best of four distinctive, low-yield red varietals grown on their estate vineyard on Howell Mountain. With this blend, their second-generation winemaker, Alan Viader, takes a departure from their "Old World" tradition of Bordeaux-style red blends, yet he remains dedicated to their philosophy of representing their magnificent terroir. Bold, structured and richly textured, the “Black Label” is a powerhouse cuvée headlined by their top lots of estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, and refined with the elegance of their signature Cabernet Franc and the soft, supple tannins of their estate Malbec.

“Breaking away from the Viader's usual varietal recipe and utilizing a large percentage of Syrah, the Estate Limited Edition is a big, meaty wine of considerable richness, but it is also one that is for the nonce bound up in prohibitively rough tannins. Its formidable astringency notwithstanding, it manages to show a bit of layering and plenty of fruity depth, but do not be in a hurry to pull its cork and lay it away in dark corner of the cellar for at least six to eight years. *One Star*” (12/2015)

The color is an attractive dark ruby, there are notes of charcoal, earth, blue and red fruits, medium body, firm tannin and an overall youthful style that suggests more to come.
