The 2024 Montmains, Forêts, Butteaux and Vaillons had all been bottled at the end of November of 2025. The Montmains was showing beautifully, delivering a refined and nicely expressive bouquet of green apple,. lime, wet stone minerality, straw, citrus peel and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, crisp and full-bodied, with good nascent complexity, a fine core of fruit, lovely soil signature, zesty acids and a long, beautifully balanced and nicely reserved finish. Good juice that will want a year or two in the cellar before drinking, just to let it completely blossom. 2028-2050+.

Note: from Montmains proper. The restrained if elegant nose makes it immediately clear that this could be from nowhere else but Chablis with its aromas of algae, iodine, citrus rind and cool green apple. The sleek, delicious and vibrant, if not especially concentrated, medium weight flavors possess the innate refinement of a classic Montmains, all wrapped in a detailed, youthfully austere and balanced finale that also needs to develop better depth.

Mid lemon yellow. Relatively steely throughout, starting with the nose, continuing through firm lemon scented fruit to a tighter finish, with some citrus concentration. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted Jun 2025.

The 2024 Chablis 1er Cru Montmain has turned out very well, unfurling aromas of Granny Smith apple and lemon oil mingling with jasmine, and grapefruit. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, racy and precise, defined by a bright spine of acidity and a long, chalky finish. More floral than Forêts, it also represents a step up from the Michel’s Village bottling. Guillaume Michel presides over this 25-hectare estate, with most of the land located in the historic part of Chablis. This estate has long been a reference point for tank-fermented and -matured Chablis, a style that the Michel family helped to popularize in the 1980s. Intense and tensile wines are the calling card here, pure and unadorned in style.(KK)

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Fine pure not overty wide or deep but the detail and clarity are super. Larger in the mouth – lots of flavour energy – mineral for sure – a little dissociated after the first two wines – but if it comes together it has the components to be excellent – the breadth of the finish already is…"(01/2026)
