The Michel family’s 2024 Butteaux “Vieilles Vignes” bottling is another stunning wine in the making. The bouquet is deep and beautifully expressive today (remember, this and the grand crus had not yet been bottled), wafting from the glass in a refined combination of lime, pear, tart orange, chalky minerality, dried flowers and a topnote of citrus zest. On the palate the wine is deep, zesty and full-bodied, with the vintage’s pure and succulent fruit at the core, great soil signature and grip, a fine spine of acidity and a very long, mineral-infused and racy finish. Stunning Butteaux. 2029-2060+.

These 70-year-old vines made a wine that contrasts elegance with sapidity. Dried apple, herbal tea and a whiff of crushed shells offer a fresh nose. The palate offers notable concentration, but it’s neither powerful nor opulent. Just perfectly ripe with soaring acidity, Guillaume Gicqueau-Michel thinks that time will do this vintage a lot of good.

Domaine Louis Michel has two cuvées of Butteaux, where it owns more than 3ha spread across six plots, the oldest planted in 1950. The old vines have delivered a wine that opens with crisp, clean aromas of lemon peel and verbena but takes on weight on the palate, with hints of chalk and oyster shell as the density and weight become apparent. This is still maturing and will not be bottled until 2026.(CC)

The old vines were spared more than most. A clear pale colour with fine pure fruit on the nose, classical for unoaked Chablis. The purity continues right across the palate, fresh apple, white flesh and then stones at the finish. All very nicely balanced. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Jun 2025.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "The old vines here are a little lower on the hill. Not so wide – but , yes, so deep with a small noble reduction. Fine scale – cooler flavours than the MdT. This has the better nose and finish today – the general flavours of the last are more in place though."(01/2026)
