Review Date: 09/2022

Still tightly closed and primary, this has aromas of forest floor, leather and rose. On the tight, racy palate, vigorous acidity accompanies sour cherry, cranberry and star anise alongside taut tannins. Give it time to fully come together. Drink after 2029. (KO)

Notes

The 2019 Cascina Morassino Barbaresco is an absolute powerhouse of a classicist Nebbiolo, hailing from Roberto Sobrino's small, meticulous family estate in the commune of Barbaresco. Sourced entirely from the clay-limestone amphitheater of the estate’s namesake cru—which sits right on the border of Ovello—this benchmark 2019 vintage showcases the brilliant structural focus, power, and high-toned precision that define this classic, late-ripening year. To honor the terroir, the winemaking is uncompromised and traditional: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts followed by extended maceration, aged for 18 months exclusively in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks (botti) to allow the true verticality of the site to express itself without any wood makeup. In the glass, it shows a bright, translucent ruby-garnet color with faint orange hues at the rim. The nose is highly primary, taut, and tightly wound, opening with crunchy sour cherries, cranberries, and wild pomegranate fruit, quickly unfurling into an ethereal mix of leather, iron, and fresh rose petals, all underpinned by a deep, savory layer of star anise and damp forest floor.
