Notes

Cordial Campari is one of the great lost bottles of Italian drinking history, a near-mythic raspberry liqueur from the family that gave the world its most iconic red bitter. While Gaspare Campari created the original Campari in 1860, it was his son Davide who pushed the house from Milanese legend to international phenomenon. After apprenticing with French liqueur-makers, Davide officially introduced Cordial Campari in 1886 as the elegant after-dinner counterpart to the bitter aperitivo that made the family famous. Two years later it was presented internationally at the 1888 Exposición Universal in Barcelona, and by the early 20th century Campari had moved into its historic Sesto San Giovanni plant, the engine of the brand’s global expansion. Clear, fragrant, and raspberry-based, Cordial Campari was not some modern flavored-brand extension, but a true cordial in the old European mode, designed to be served neat, chilled, over ice, or in cocktails. Long discontinued as the company moved deeper into bitter liqueurs and the aperitivo occasion, it has become the sort of bottle most bartenders and collectors only read about. Somehow, we’ve located an unprecedented stash of this impossibly rare liqueur, one of the strangest and most exciting opportunities we’ve ever had in the category. For Campari obsessives, cocktail historians, and anyone who loves the vanished flavors of old Italy, this is not just a bottle. It’s a time capsule.
