The 2005 Clos Vougeot was raised in its customary fifty percent new oak, but the wine is so deep and sappy that there is very little trace of the wood on either the nose or the palate. The bouquet is deep, pure and primary, as it offers up notes of plums, black cherries, cocoa, a bit of black raspberry, espresso, minerals, woodsmoke and a touch of new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and very long, with great purity, laser-like focus, velvety tannins and a long, primary and very tangy finish. A great bottle of Clos Vougeot in the making.
