Int'l Wine Review

The 2023 Martin Woods Koosah Vineyard Chardonnay from the Eola-Amity Hills was aged in all neutral French oak and pours with a pale golden hue that immediately reflects its vitality. Aromas leap from the glass with ripe starfruit, white nectarine, and hints of orange blossom, layered against crushed seashell and wet crushed stones. The vineyard’s shallow, rocky soils lend a concentrated edge upon the first sip. On the palate, the wine carries striking intensity, moving between Meyer lemon, pineapple core, and salted almond, framed by an undercurrent of electric tension. There is a coiled strength at its core, suggesting further evolution with cellaring, yet already it reveals harmony between fruit, minerality, and acidity. The finish stretches long and clean, carrying a saline echo alongside delicate floral lift. This Chardonnay demonstrates both depth and restraint, and is a benchmark expression of Koosah Vineyard. This wine would pair beautifully with butter-poached langoustines served with saffron rice. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.

Jeb Dunnuck

Silver/yellow-hued, the 2023 Chardonnay Koosah Vineyard is highly expressive in the glass, with notes of fresh pineapples, tropical flowers, jasmine, chalky earth, and white grapefruit. From a vineyard planted in shallow rocky soils and aged in eight-year-old neutral French oak, there’s more power behind this wine, and it drives through the palate. It’s going to need more time, but it’s very impressive.

Vinous

The 2023 Chardonnay Koosah Vineyard is wonderfully fresh and inviting to the senses as a cascade of white flowers, nuances of lemon oil and freshly shaved pine waft up from the glass. It is soothingly round and pliant, offering a tension-building mix of minerals and citrus tones that perfectly offset its ripe orchard fruits. Spicy and long, the 2023 leaves the palate reeling through the finish, saline yet fresh, while leaving a lip-smacking sensation that lingers.
