The kingpin Volnay in the cellars is simply stunning this year and the 2010 Lafarge Clos des Chênes is going to be well worth a special search of the market to secure a few bottles. The brilliantly complex and classy nose offers up a magical mélange of red plums, cherries, a nice touch of blood orange, woodsmoke, gamebirds, raw cocoa and a brilliantly pure and complex base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very, very complex, with a sappy core, very suave tannins, brilliant focus and superb length and grip on the utterly classic finish. I had the ridiculous good fortune to taste the 1945 Clos des Chênes on this trip, and the 2010 could very well end up when all is said and done as magical as that great wine! A brilliant Clos des Chênes. (Drink between 2025-2075)

The 2010 Volnay Clos des Chenes sweeps across the palate with endless layers of fruit. It is a gorgeous, seamless wine graced with exquisite finesse and class. Nothing really stands out, as all of the elements are perfectly in place. Suave, silky tannins frame a long, utterly polished finish supported by insistent saline notes. This is a great showing. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040. (AG)

Exceptionally fresh and complex aromas are comprised by notes of spice, plum, red berry fruit liqueur and plenty of wet stone character that are framed in a discreet hint violet. There is equally fine depth on the focused and sleekly muscular flavors that exude a sense of focused power before culminating in a strikingly long and overtly mineral-inflected finish. While clearly built-to-age this is not quite so backward as many vintages of the Lafarge Clos des Chênes in the sense that it could be enjoyed now. With that said, I would be strongly inclined to allow it at least another 8 to 12 years of cellar time or so first. Tasted thrice recently with consistent results.

Medium red. Strong, slightly decadent aromas of redcurrant and dried rose. Broad, sweet and generous but also nicely supported by a serious spine of acidity and substantial ripe tannins. Very closed wine, not currently showing the verve or lift of the 2011, but strong on material. (ST)
