The 2008 Mugneret Clos Vougeot, which I had a chance to savor over several hours with dinner that evening, is a great wine in the making. The magical bouquet soars from the glass in a blaze of cherries, red plums, blood orange, incipient notes of gamebird, a touch of cocoa, fresh herb tones, a very complex base of soil and a fine framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and suavely tannic, with a sappy core of fruit, tangy acids, brilliant focus and balance and a very, very long, very soil-driven finish. This is a Clos Vougeot with the breed and elegance of Musigny in this vintage. (Drink between 2018-2050) (95+)

Burghound

A deeply pitched nose displays attractive, if discreet, spiced aromas of primarily red berry fruits that include a broad array of warm earth notes as well as animale and underbrush hints that lead to delicious, powerful and intense big-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract and a linear, concentrated and driving finish that displays more than a little of the classic austerity of young Clos de Vougeot, indeed one could deservedly call this Cistercian. The relatively dense tannins are actually fairly refined for the appellation but this will still require at least 15 years to be at its best. (Drink starting 2023)

The 2008 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is probably peaking now. Beautiful on the nose, very refined and pure with wild strawberry, kirsch, crushed stone and rose petal, it exudes elegance. The palate has a piquant entry, poised with lace-like tannins, very harmonious with wondrous tension intertwined on the finish. Tender, yet powerful. Superb. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune. (Drink between 2023-2040) (NM)
