Highly complex and deeply perfumed, with aromas of mulberries, blackberries, blood plums, blueberries and violets on the nose. The palate is full-bodied with seamless tannins and focused acidity, giving notes of black cherries, mocha, black pepper, cassia bark, sarsaparilla, spices and tobacco leaves. Well balanced with a firmly integrated finish from 50% whole-cluster fermentation

98+ points. I'm excited to taste this, as it was my favorite cuvée last year. It usually changes year to year, given the seasons, and I like that. It's usually the only cuvée to enjoy the benefits of an alternate vessel—a concrete egg—and this year, the 2022 The Schubert Theorem Shiraz joins the Relic and the Standish as well. The impact of the egg in this wine is one of refinement, or so I see it; it retains a purity of fruit at the core, which speaks to the chalky tannins that spool through the finish. They're chewy and seductive and really great. It's a beautiful release—not shimmering like the 2021, but textural and fine and elongated in its way. It's a beguiling wine, a thinking wine. And, as with the other wines tasted alongside, the bottle that has been open for two days is infinitely more complete; however, it must be noted that this review is built on the freshly opened bottle. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Made with 100% shiraz from the Schubert vineyard on Roennfeldt Road, Marananga. Dang, what a wine! Depth, intensity and impact with abundant energy and latent power within. It's all juicy blueberry and satsuma plum fruits, ferrous-dusted and head-turning in their purity. Layers of spice, roasting meats, salted licorice, stone, graphite and earth. The aromas and flavours seem to stretch out like a panorama, with the tannins compact and akin to powdered ironstone. There is a long, graceful textural draw here, plenty of energy and drive too. Whoosh! (DB)

The seductive 2022 The Schubert Theorem delivers a powerful mix of mocha, fresh tar, blackberry and French oak that is hard to put down. It is seriously intense, with firm acidity and dense tannins driving a bullet of flavor that slowly opens into gravelly, earthy tones. It has a great structure and is built for the long haul. (AH)

Notes

The Standish Wine Company is renowned for producing some of Australia’s most compelling Shiraz—wines that are rich, structured, and powerful, yet also refined, terroir-expressive, and built for longevity. Established in 1999 by Dan Standish, the winery has since garnered widespread acclaim, including multiple perfect 100-point scores from top international wine critics, including the Wine Advocate, who recognized Standish as a benchmark of “exceptionally high quality” among Australian Shiraz producers. Sourcing fruit from centenarian, ungrafted vines in the heart of the Barossa Valley, the wines reflect a deep connection to place. Dan Standish champions a “hands-off” approach to winemaking—favoring traditional, low-intervention techniques that allow the vineyard to speak for itself. Grapes are foot-crushed and undergo wild fermentation in open wooden casks, followed by gentle pressing in old basket presses. Maturation takes place in seasoned French oak barrels.
