2013 Va Piano "Black Label Reserve" Walla Walla Valley Syrah Horizontal
Bid on this 4-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of 2013 Va Piano "Black Label Reserve - Les Collines Vineyard" Walla Walla Valley Syrah (93RP, 92VN, 92WS), 2-bottles of 2013 Va Piano "Black Label Reserve - Lewis Vineyard" Yakima Valley Syrah (92RP, 90VN, 90WS), and 1-bottle of 2013 Va Piano "Black Label - Portteus Vineyard" Walla Walla Valley Syrah. Of the 2013 Va Piano "Black Label Reserve - Les Collines Vineyard" Walla Walla Valley Syrah , Wine Advocate writes: "The 2013 Syrah Black Label Les Collines (aged in 70% new French oak) is a thing of beauty. Fresh, yet concentrated, with terrific black fruits, smoked meats, pepper and liquid violets aromas and flavors, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a ripe, voluptuous texture and a great finish. It lacks a touch of the focus found in the Lewis vineyard, but it has more richness and depth. Give it a year or three and it should knock your socks off for a decade. (JD) 93+" (06/2015)

“Good red-ruby. Floral aromas of raspberry, lilac and licorice show an inviting carnal quality. Juicy and suave in the mouth, showing superb lift and definition to its flavors of dark berries, black cherry and minerals. Fine-grained, sophisticated Syrah with slightly chewy tannins and a long, juicy finish. (ST)” (11/2015)

Wine Spectator
“Plays deep, tarry, smoky, licorice-scented black fruit flavors against a lithe structure, with the tannins nicely arrayed to let the flavors shine through. The finish is energized by focus and lively acidity. (HS)” (10/2015)

Stephen Tanzer for Vinous with backstory on the producer: "Va Piano's vineyard-designated bottlings have black labels. Va Piano now produces about 8,000 cases a year from top vineyards around the state, including their own Va Piano vineyard in the southeast corner of Walla Walla Valley Winemaker Justin Wylie noted that he’s increasingly focusing on making estate wines from Walla Walla, explaining that he used to hedge his bets against frost by buying widely but that his new vineyards are at higher elevation and are thus less frost-prone. He also buries the Va Piano estate vines every winter to shield them from frost damage." (06/2016)

“More spice-driven than the Les Collines, the 2013 Syrah Black Label Lewis Vineyard has abundant notes of mulled blackberries, ground herbs, cured meats and toasted spice to go with a full-bodied, nicely concentrated, yet always fresh and pure style on the palate. It too will have 10-15 years of overall longevity. (JD)” (06/2015)

“(from 100% destemmed fruit, as the stems here stay green, according to winemaker Justin Wylie): Bright ruby-red. Captivating, rather wild nose offers scents of black raspberry, mocha and brown spices. Plush and sweet in the mouth, conveying lovely finesse of texture to the dark raspberry, spice and licorice flavors. Finishes a tad tart but with ripe tannins and excellent subtle length. (ST)” (11/2015)

“Rich and ripe, focusing its smoky, licorice-accented blackberry flavors into a lithe structure, finishing with a meaty note against fine tannin, with grace. (HS)” (11/2015)

Va Piano’s story begins in 1999, when its 20-acre estate in Walla Walla Valley was first planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot—varieties that remain its core focus today. The winery’s production ethos centers on meticulous vineyard work: vertical shoot positioning, intensive hand-pruning, leaf-thinning, shoot-positioning, and cluster-thinning, all designed to achieve optimal sunlight and even ripening. Founder and winemaker Justin Wylie shaped Va Piano’s identity after studying in Florence, drawing inspiration from Tuscan architecture and the Italian proverb "Chi va piano, va sano e va lontano." (He who moves gently, moves safely and far.) Today, the estate produces small-lot Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and red blends, supplemented by limited Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Rosé.Va Piano Vineyards Roughly 70% of the vineyard’s fruit goes into Va Piano’s own wines, with the remainder sold to respected Walla Walla producers.

“My favorite of the single vineyard Syrahs (but not by much), the 2013 Syrah Black Label Portteus Vineyard comes from the Rattlesnake Hills AVA and offers classic Washington State Syrah funkiness, with lots of tapenade, dried violets, cured meats and sweet cassis and currant fruit all emerging from the glass. Full-bodied, ripe, textured and layered, with smoking purity, it’s a terrific Syrah to drink over the coming 10-15 years. (JD)” (06/2015)

“Aromas of tilled soil, herbs, flowers, olive, black pepper and orange peel lead to fresh, elegant smoked meat flavors with spot on balance. It's a unique expression of the variety from the state that keeps you coming back for more. (SS)” (05/2016)

“(vinified with 60% whole clusters): Bright red-ruby. Sexy nose combines raspberry, smoked meat, mint and a whiff of lavender. Pure and fine-grained if still a bit youthfully tight, with the fruit and game flavors lifted by violet, lavender and lilac florality. With aeration, some medicinal red fruits emerged. Distinctly less pliant than the 2012 bottling was at a similar stage, and even a bit tart, but I love the aromatics here. (ST)” (07/2015)
