Blueberry jam, spiced plum, nutmeg and licorice on the nose. Savory black olive, too. It’s full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Lots of tangy berry jam and spices.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Bench Reserve is another ripe, darker fruited effort from this estate that represents a good value. Blackcurrants, violets, orange peel, and tobacco notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, nicely textured 2018 with a straight, focused texture, ripe tannins, and solid length on the finish.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Bench Reserve sports a deep garnet-purple color and notes of baked plums, stewed black cherries and black olives with nuances of bay leaves, mocha and yeast extract. The medium to full-bodied palate has a chewy texture and just enough freshness to frame the baked berry flavors, finishing with an herbal lift. (LPB)

A sleek, tightly focused style, with red currant and bitter cherry notes racing along, lined with subtle cedar and mineral hints. Reveals modest toast in the end, which provides nice purity. (JM)

Notes

Sequoia Grove traces its modern start to 1978, when James and Barbara Allen purchased part of the old Rancho Caymus land grant in Rutherford and opened their winery the following year in a century-old barn beneath the estate’s sequoias. The property includes a 24-acre estate vineyard and the 50-acre Tonella Ranch, both on Rutherford’s gravelly loam, long tied to structured Cabernet. The winery became known for balanced, site-driven Bordeaux varieties and later expanded under the Kopf family, who assumed full ownership in 2002. Today production centers on Cabernet Sauvignon supported by sustainable farming and ongoing investment in vineyards and facilities, all aimed at expressing Rutherford fruit with clarity and restraint.
