Full bottle a heavy 1,628 g. The 4.81-hectare plot of Grands Esprits has large, round, rocky, limestone-rich soils planted between 1970 and 1980. Occupying almost one-quarter of the Clos Marey-Monge, the 220 rows of Grands Esprits is the most calcareous area in the Clos. Three different bottlings from the Clos were presented in a clearly very expensive box. Hand-harvested organic grapes, hand-sorted on a vibrating table, 20% whole-cluster, fermented in tank, long maceration, minimal pumping-over and punching-down, aged in barrel on fine lees for 18 months. 25% new barrels. 4,000 bottles produced. Mid ruby. Smells slightly richer than the Marey-Monge blend, but also a little more stony/mineral and less cherry-fruited. Still with a delicate stemmy note, and more floral on the day after opening but well structured. On the palate, this is firmer in texture, more chewy, more robust, but still refined. A little fuller in the mouth and longer, too. Not quite as approachable. More sturdy but still polished. Balanced now but needs more time. (JH) (17+)
