The deep purple-colored 2016 Shadow Canyon is a blend of 92% Syrah and 8% Grenache from the York Mountain AVA on the western edge of Paso Robles. This is a cooler, wetter region compared to Paso Robles and the wines from here always have a cool climate vibe. Deep purple-colored, with lots of darker, meaty fruits, game, damp forest floor, and peppery aromas and flavors, this full-bodied Syrah is one of the more dense, chewy wines in the lineup. Give it a year or two, and it should drink nicely through 2026. This estate hit a home run with these latest 2016s, and the charming, more supple style of the vintage worked perfectly with the more savory, classic style preferred by McPrice Myers. These are unquestionably the finest wines I’ve tasted from him, and readers should snatch up these wines. (JD)
