A collaboration between acclaimed Marlborough winemakers Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson MW, the husband-and-wife team behind Marlborough winery Blank Canvas, and grower John Blackmore, Ahi Ka was created to show just how much individuality and quality can be found in Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. This project centers on Blackmore’s exceptional single vineyard in Dillon’s Point, one of Marlborough’s most highly regarded sites for Sauvignon Blanc, where the fruit benefits from cool maritime conditions and fertile, well-drained alluvial soils. The Ahi Ka “Blackmore” Sauvignon Blanc is simply delicious – and also one of the best values I’ve seen in a long time – offering up notes of lime zest, passionfruit, and classic gooseberry alongside floral and subtle saline notes, with bright acidity and a surprisingly rich texture on the palate. The wine is made with the same meticulous, site-focused approach that defines the Blank Canvas wines, and the connection is more than just a marketing association: Matt and Sophie are the founders of both projects, while Matt has known and worked with Blackmore’s vineyard for more than 20 years.
