2020 Cullen "Diana Madeline" Bordeaux Blend Margaret River Western Australia

Decanter
Review Date: 06/2023Ripe. slippery blueberry, blackcurrant, mulberry and salty plum fruit reflects the warm, near-drought year and measly yields. Opening up, iodine, tea leaf, tobacco, dried rose and violet nuances emerge. Chocolatey wrap-around tannins gently embrace and build. Gorgeous fluidity and mouthfeel, with an ethereal, gossamer finish, pronounced minerality (lead shot, terracotta, ironstone), and soft but lingering grip. Aged in barriques and puncheons, 50% new, some biodynamic, with 9% amphora-fermented. (SA)

Notes
Cullen Wines is one of the founding estates of the Margaret River region, established in 1971 by Kevin Cullen and Diana Cullen. From its earliest years, the winery played a crucial role in demonstrating that Margaret River could produce world-class wines, particularly in Bordeaux-inspired styles. The estate’s flagship wine, the Diana Madeline, was first produced in 1983 and named in honor of Diana Cullen, reflecting both family legacy and the estate’s heritage. Made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, often blended with small amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, Diana Madeline quickly became one of Australia’s most respected Cabernet-based wines, helping to establish Margaret River’s global reputation for premium red wines. Under the leadership of Vanya Cullen, daughter of the founders, the wine has evolved to reflect a strong commitment to biodynamic and organic viticulture. This approach has reinforced its identity as a wine that expresses both site and sustainability, aligning with broader shifts in fine wine production. Over time, Diana Madeline has consistently been regarded as a benchmark for Australian Cabernet blends, frequently cited alongside the country’s most iconic wines.
