1981 Philippe Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Combe aux Moines"
BH
Burghound
Review Date: 07/20071981 was routinely slammed initially as being one of the worst vintages in years yet a number of wines have turned out surprisingly well, including this one. The fully mature and highly expressive nose offers up a mix of secondary and tertiary fruit, including ample sous bois and forest floor aromas where this gamy character can also be found on the still vibrant, round and delicious middle weight flavors of real depth and length though the finish betrays a bit of acidity poking through. Still, this is more than respectable in the context of the vintage, indeed even admirable.
