2012 Proper Wines Estate Walla Walla Valley Syrah
91
Vinous
Review Date: 12/2014(13.9% alcohol; aged for 16 months in 20% new and 80% used French oak; from vines in the Rocks, in their sixth leaf): Bright ruby-red. Complex, inviting aromas of black raspberry, spicecake, smoke and roasted game bird. Supple, fine-grained and suave, with lovely restrained sweetness to the flavors of raspberry, plum, lavender and mint. Riper and more harmonious than the 2011 was at the same stage of its evolution but not a bit heavy. Nuances of mint and licorice add piquancy. Ripe tannins and firm, harmonious acidity give the lingering, perfumed finish very good lift. This is excellent—not to mention an impressive performance for young vines. (ST)

Notes
Proper Wines began in 2005 when Colorado friends Conor McCluskey and David Houle purchased an eight acre cherry orchard in the Rocks District of Walla Walla Valley. Syrah vines replaced the cherries in 2007, and the first estate wine arrived in 2011. The project grew with additional partners and a clear focus on Rhône inspired Syrah shaped by the stony soils of the Rocks. Winemaker Sean Boyd has led production since the early vintages, working with native yeasts and minimal intervention to keep the vineyard at the center of the style. In 2018 the winery joined the Rotie Cellars family, continuing its commitment to site driven Washington Syrah.
