2010 Proper "Estate" Walla Walla Valley Syrah

Review Date: 06/2013A thrilling Syrah as well as a smoking value, the 2010 Syrah comes from this new winery’s estate vineyard which located in the Rocks region of southern Walla Walla Valley, not far from Cayuse Vineyards. A 100% Syrah that spent 16 months in a scant 20% new French oak, it offers up a wild array of plum, hung game, pepper and lavender that flows to a full-bodied, ethereally textured palate that has knockout richness, awesome freshness and a light, detailed profile that’s oh so easy drinking. Utterly captivating, with a La Mouline-like suppleness and texture, this brilliant Syrah needs to be purchased by the case. It will continue to thrill for over a decade. (JD)

Notes
Proper Wines began in 2005 when Colorado friends Conor McCluskey and David Houle purchased an eight acre cherry orchard in the Rocks District of Walla Walla Valley. Syrah vines replaced the cherries in 2007, and the first estate wine arrived in 2011. The project grew with additional partners and a clear focus on Rhône inspired Syrah shaped by the stony soils of the Rocks. Winemaker Sean Boyd has led production since the early vintages, working with native yeasts and minimal intervention to keep the vineyard at the center of the style. In 2018 the winery joined the Rotie Cellars family, continuing its commitment to site driven Washington Syrah.
