2020 Matthiasson Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
94
James Suckling
Review Date: 05/2024Beautiful, aromatic and balanced, this relatively light Napa cab harkens back to the early 1980s with its medium body, great acid balance and moderate tannins. Fragrant in red currants and cherries, with hints of toast, sage and cedar, it’s full on the palate and long on the finish. Drink or hold.

Vines planted in 1982. Harvested 20 August. Fermented at low temperatures in small, open-top tanks and punched down by hand one to three times per day. Aged 20 months in 20% new French oak, a few older French oak barrels, two seasoned demi-muids and a large foudre. TA 8.1 g/l, pH 3.73. CCOF organic.Medium nearing pale ruby in colour – quite unusual. Lively nose with high-toned red fruit – redcurrant, cherry and pomegranate – and a lovely rose-like floral note. The palate is fresh and earthy with notes of cedar, mulch and soft green herbs complimenting the bright red fruit. Gentle but persistent tannin. Incredibly elegant. 17.5/20 points (SCJ)
