Review Date: 03/2022

This 2020 version of Kobayashi Marsanne-Roussanne has a good portion of Roussanne added (32%) compared to just a touch from the year before. The wine saw a week of skin contact and roughly 50% new French oak (mostly cigar-shaped barrels) for 12 months prior to bottling. The nose does show a strong Roussanne presence with its green fruit notes, alongside honeydew melon, salted macadamia nut, lychee and roasted pineapple. The palate is unbelievably seamless despite its youth. This is very "Chave Blanc" with its oily texture. It’s a big wine, but the sense of balance is truly extraordinary. I can see this having an exceedingly long life ahead of it. (OB)

Notes

Kobayashi Wines began in 2014 when Travis Allen and Mario Kobayashi launched a tiny Cabernet Franc project that quickly evolved into one of Washington’s most distinctive micro producers. The Allens work out of the Force Majeure facility in Milton Freewater, keeping production under 1,000 cases and focusing on Northern Rhône varieties and Cabernet Franc sourced from top Columbia Valley sites such as WeatherEye and Red Willow. Travis’s approach blends meticulous detail with a willingness to experiment, including the use of Japanese Mizunara oak, a rarity in American winemaking. Farming partners supply high elevation and wind exposed parcels that shape the fruit, while cellar work remains small scale and intentionally restrained.
