L'Encantada "Domaine Artigaux / 2012 / Ugni Blanc, Domaine de Pouy / 1999 / Colombard, Domaine Cutxan / 2001 / Folle Blanche" Discovery Box Set (3x200ml)
I still remember the first time I tasted through L’Encantada’s casks in the little shed outside Vic-Fezensac more than decade ago and realizing almost immediately that we were looking at something completely revolutionary. At the time, virtually no one in the U.S. was paying attention to these tiny Gascon domaines, but here was a bottler working exclusively with small growers, distilling on traditional mobile alembic Armagnacais stills set up in the vineyards, and bottling everything exactly as it came from the barrel. No reduction, no coloring, no manipulation. Just pure, unfiltered Armagnac. That commitment to authenticity is why L’Encantada has gone from obscurity to one of the most respected names among serious buyers. This Discovery Box is a perfect snapshot of that philosophy, built around three estates that could not be more emblematic of the region’s diversity. Domaine Artigaux 2012, located near Campagne d’Armagnac in the heart of Bas-Armagnac, comes from a family estate that has been distilling since 1976, carrying forward a tradition rooted in careful vineyard work and patient élevage. The 30-hectare property sits on clay-loam soils that lend both structure and aromatic lift, while aging in local Gascon oak within humid cellars allows the spirit from this vintage to develop supple texture and a distinctive aromatic profile without sacrificing freshness. Domaine de Pouy 1999 offers a very different perspective, rooted in the historic Ténarèze zone near Condom. This vintage reflects the house style of a working farm distillery where Armagnac is shaped as much by time as by terroir. The heavier soils of the region and long aging in traditional chai give the 1999 a deeper, more structured character, with a density and mid-palate weight that stand in contrast to the more lifted Bas-Armagnac style, showcasing the power and longevity for which Ténarèze is known. Finally, Domaine Cutxan 2001, situated near Cazaubon on the western edge of Bas-Armagnac, highlights one of the more quietly revered terroirs in the appellation. The sandy, well-drained soils here are known for producing particularly expressive distillates, and the estate’s adherence to traditional methods results in Armagnac that is both highly aromatic and structurally precise. The 2001 vintage, aged slowly in seasoned Gascon oak, retains a strong sense of place while building layered complexity over time, offering a refined and deeply characterful expression of the domaine. Taken together, these three vintages offer a remarkably clear window into what makes Armagnac so compelling when it is left in the hands of growers who understand their land and a bottler willing to present their work without compromise. Needless to say, we've got an incredible, nearly unprecedented deal on the final stocks of these rare wonderful brandies.

Notes
L’Encantada has quickly become one of the most exciting sources for traditional Armagnac, working with tiny domaines across Gascony and bottling each cask exactly as it is found. Their partner growers distill on classic mobile Alembic Armagnacais stills, often set up directly in the vineyards, and every selection is bottled "raw," (brut de fut) with no dilution or added coloring, preserving the full character of the spirit. This beautifully presented Discovery Box offers three 200ml bottles that highlight the breadth of the category through different estates, vintages, and grape varieties. Domaine Artigaux’s 2012 Ugni Blanc shows the brighter, more lifted side of Bas-Armagnac from a small family estate. Domaine de Pouy’s 1999 Colombard comes from a historic farming property known for deeper, more structured eaux-de-vie aged patiently in traditional cellars. Domaine Cutxan’s 2001 Folle Blanche captures one of the region’s most prized grapes, delivering elegance and aromatic complexity from a producer dedicated to preserving this fragile variety. Three domaines, three decades, three grapes, and a concise, compelling introduction to one of France’s most authentic spirits.
