2024 Carl Loewen Maximin Herrenberg "1896" Riesling Mosel
99
James Suckling
Review Date: 10/2025Incredibly deep but also wonderfully delicate, this is a great masterpiece of dry Mosel riesling. Subtle peaches, wildflowers and berries on the nose. And that’s just the beginning of a description of this giant of minerality and finesse. Still very young. Vegan. Drink or hold.

Notes
94pts Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 14 25. The 1896 Riesling 2024, as it is simply referred to on the front dark-grey label (the reference to the vineyard is left for the back label), is a just off-dry wine (with 10 g/l of residual sugar) picked on un-grafted vines planted in 1896 in the Longuicher Maximiner Herrenberg, and was made using traditional winemaking methods dating back to the early 1900s and fermented in a 60-year-old Fuder still made from Mosel oak. It offers a superbly engaging, complex, and subtle nose made of white peach, mirabelle, herbs, spices, and whipped cream. The wine is beautifully engaging on the palate, where the fruit complexity is nicely wrapped in zesty minerals. The finish reveals a great touch of grapefruit zest and a hint of underripe pineapple. Once again, this remarkable off-dry wine delivers the goods: What a great off-dry Riesling in the making! 2029-2044."(01/2026)
