2022 Canard Vineyard "Alluvia Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Notes
Canard Winery’s story begins with an 1880s Calistoga vineyard that still produces a tiny crop of dry-farmed Zinfandel, the backbone of its small-lot reds. The modern estate took shape in 1983, when Rich and Carolyn Czapleski purchased the old Reason P. Tucker homestead at Dunaweal Lane and Silverado Trail. The 25-acre site includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot rooted in gravelly soils that give natural concentration. Farming is sustainable with careful canopy work to preserve balance in Calistoga’s warm days and cool nights. Fermentations emphasize purity, and each parcel is handled separately to keep the wines focused on structure, ripe fruit and a clear sense of place. The Alluvia Estate is produced entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon grown on a small alluvial fan at the top of Canard’s Cabernet block, where just five rows consistently yield the most concentrated fruit.
