Notes
As Laxas is a family-owned winery located in the Condado do Tea sub-rehion of Rías Baixas in Galicia, northwest Spain, specifically in the town of Arbo along the banks of the Miño River. This is the most interior of all the Rias Baixas sub-regions, leading to fuller-bodied, more exuberant styles of Albariño. The estate sits in a landscape of granite soils and rolling, river-carved terrain that strongly influences the freshness of its wines. The winery’s origins date back to the mid-to-late 19th century, with winemaking activity documented on the estate long before modern commercial production began. As Laxas officially began commercial production in the mid-1970s and quickly became one of the pioneering estates in the region. The winery was among the early members involved in the creation of the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin (DO) in the 1980s, playing a role in establishing the standards that define Albariño production today. Over time, the estate has grown significantly, now farming dozens of hectares of vineyards—primarily Albariño, with smaller plantings of other native Galician varieties—spread across estate-owned and locally sourced parcels.
