Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Caldwell Syrah waltzes out with showy notes of black cherries, black raspberries, and rose oil followed by hints of charcoal, anise, and forest floor. The full-bodied palate explodes with savory and black fruit layers framed by ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length and loads of savory layers. (LPB)

Syrah's seeming lack of respect among Napa Valley consumers means that wines like Modus Operandi's 2021 Syrah Caldwell Vineyard are often very attractively priced compared to their Cabernet Sauvignon counterparts. There's an appealing hint of menthol and big blackberry fruit, no cracked pepper but a nice licorice spice throughout. It's full-bodied, supple and easy to drink, with a long, spice drop-inflected finish. It should drink well for 15 years or so. The only drawback to this beautiful wine is that there are only 60 cases to go around. (JC)

Notes

Modus Operandi Cellars is a small-production winery founded by Jason Moore, centered on vineyard-designate wines that highlight the individuality of some of California’s top sites. This Syrah is sourced from Caldwell Vineyard in the eastern hills of Napa Valley, where rocky volcanic soils and abundant sunlight yield intensely concentrated fruit balanced by freshness from cool evening temperatures. Moore’s restrained winemaking approach allows the vineyard’s savory complexity, structure, and mineral character to come forward without excessive oak or extraction.
