The 2016 Musigny from Monsieur Mugnier is destined to be a legendary wine in the fullness of time, but it is a beautifully structured example of the vintage and will need a good decade’s worth of bottle age before it really starts to blossom. The very complex nose offers up a stunning and sappy aromatic constellation of red plums, red and black cherries, beautiful floral tones, raw cocoa, a very complex base of soil, gamebird, woodsmoke, a hint of mustard seed and a discreet base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full, deep, pure and sappy at the core, with a complex, fabulously balanced and very long backend. The tannins here are suave and seamless, the acids bright and vibrant and the wine goes on forever on the magical finish. At this early stage, this reminds me very strongly of the brilliant 2010 Musigny chez Mugnier. 98+

Fine mid purple in colour. A very appealing fresh deep red fruit on the nose, quite restrained. Then a bombshell explosion of rich ripe sweet fruit, with just enough acidity at the back. It grows and develops very well, not the most blockbuster of Musignys but finely balanced. This has come on tremendously since tasted in barrel. Indeed only 4 barrels are being bottled as Musigny, with 2 declassified after the frost. Tasted: September 2019.

Mugnier's 2016 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is just being released, but readers should take its eight years of cellaring at the domaine as a statement of intent rather than a sign to start pulling corks on reception, as the wine is still very far from maturity. Unwinding in the glass with scents of dark berries, orange rind, exotic spices and a deft framing of new oak, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a hugely concentrated core of fruit that reflects the year's low yields, lively acids and supple but abundant structuring tannins, it concludes with a long, palate-staining finish. A beautiful floral nose and a wonderful medium-bodied palate belie the difficult birth of this wine, the product of a brutal April frost. Production here was just four barrels, down from an average of 16. But what a wine. Sweet fruit, earthy and spicy notes, this reminds me in some ways of the ‘14 and is if anything ever more complete. If I used exclamation points, I would use them here. Drink now and for the next fifteen years. (JM)
