1996 Domaine De Charron 29 Year Old Singel Barrel K&L Exclusive Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

Notes

The little house off the main road in Perquie does not look like it should contain one of the most singular stocks of spirit in Gascony, but that is part of Domaine de Charron’s magic. Claude Lartigue, a relative of the Darroze family, built Charron into something utterly its own: a tiny Bas-Armagnac domaine centered on Baco, producing only four to six barrels of brandy in a normal year. The cellar philosophy is almost shocking for the region. Charron is filled into new oak, then left alone, with no racking, no polishing, and no attempt to soften the edges into some anonymous house style. It is Armagnac made with the stubborn directness of great bourbon, yet anchored entirely in Gascon soil, local farming, and the peculiar power of Baco in Perquie. The chai itself is a revelation: small, orderly, beautifully maintained, and unusually immaculate by regional standards, the kind of place that tells you immediately the casks are being watched with quiet precision. This 1996 single barrel is exactly the sort of thing that makes our direct-import program so exciting. It represents a tiny output, an idiosyncratic producer, a vanishingly rare style, and a mature vintage that would be nearly impossible to recreate at scale. For whiskey drinkers looking beyond whiskey, and Armagnac lovers who prize character over polish, Charron remains one of the category’s great discoveries.
