You would never guess that one of the most distinctive cellars in Bas-Armagnac sits just off the road in the tiny Landes village of Perquie. Domaine de Charron is not some grand château operation, but a proudly microscopic estate built around Baco, the hybrid grape that seems almost purpose-built for the sandy, iron-streaked sables fauves of the region. The Lartigue family’s story is part accident, part stubbornness: their vines had long fed the cooperative, with the occasional barrel tucked away for family use, until 1985, when Jacques and Claude Lartigue refused to let the old Baco disappear and revived production under the Charron name. The scale remains almost absurdly small, with only a handful of casks produced in a normal year, yet the style is monumental. The chai itself tells you plenty: beautifully kept, orderly, and almost shockingly immaculate by regional standards, a manicured little cellar where every cask seems to have its place. Charron is aged in new oak and then essentially left alone, a method that feels closer in spirit to great bourbon than to most polished, racked Armagnac. That is exactly why this 2005 single barrel matters.
